What is a Visual Journal?
Assignment
Your assignment is to redesign your sketchbook cover to represent your identity. I want this design to give you the freedom to express yourself and your own style. This is a multimedia project and you should incorporate both drawing and painting. I want you to express your own artistic voice with this sketchbook cover!

Requirements:
Your design should represent your identity.
You need to have a focal point in your composition.
You need to incorporate pattern.
You need to mix paint colors in your design.
Design should use more than one material.
You need to incorporate text in some way.

What is your identity?
Identity is a combination of things that make you who you are. It’s your talents, it’s your strengths, it’s your passions, it’s what you love, it’s what you care about. Identity is what you believe in and what you're interested in. Identity is your style and your personality. Identity is your culture and your experiences. Identity is what makes you, YOU!

What is a focal point?
The focal point of a composition is an area of emphasis that demands the most attention.
How to create a focal point?
Make focal point larger or bolder than those areas around it.
Make a contrasting color.
Make direction of background or other areas of the design lead to the focal point.

Gather materials, make drawings of particular images
Print out images if you want to include printed images
Spray gesso your cover before you leave

Color Theory and Mixing
Controlling the Paint:
When mixing color start with the "lighter" color, mix in small amounts of the "darker" color until you get your desired hue.
Make sure you clean your brushes when you switch colors.
Use an appropriate amount of paint on your brush to avoid clumps.
