Unit 4: Enameling

Objective:

1. I can form metal

2. I can utilize a variety of enameling techniques.

3. I understand the safety precautions when using enamels.

4. I can use counter-enamels

Assignment:

Your assignment is to create three jewelry pieces utilizing different enameling techniques. You can decide which enameling techniques you would like to use for which piece.

You need:

  • One set of earrings

  • One pendant

  • One pin/broach

Enameling techniques:

  • Sgraffito

  • Painted enamel

  • Wet/Dry Stencil

How to Enamel (basics)

1. Clean metal...Duh at this point.

2. Amacote to protect areas of the copper you do not want enameled. Let dry.

3. Paint a coat of "Klyr-Fyre" as a bonding agent on the areas where you want the enamel to stick.

4. Sift enamel over the Klyr-Fyre

5. Place on trivet into the kiln for 2-3 minutes at 1450 degrees

6. Let cool on fire proof surface like the ceramic tray.
