Week 2: Photographing and Planning

Learning Target: I can photograph my artwork.

Why? To document how your artwork appears in real life.

How? By learning to use proper lighting, angle, and editing.

Video Instructions:

The goal of this week's assignment is to do two things:

1. You will sketch out the art piece you are going to reproduce, analyze the composition, the colors used, and make note about what objects you have around the house that can mimic these shapes and colors.

2. You will use the following photography strategies and practice by photographing your sketch and uploading it to Google Classroom.

Planning:

Directions:

1. Choose a work of art from your virtual museum tour. This should be one you want to recreate with found objects (see examples below).

2. Create a full page sketch of the art piece, in color if possible. It doesn't need to be "perfectly" drawn, the purpose is for planning and thinking things through.

3. Make note of shapes and colors you see- take notes on your sketch of what objects you have around your house that could mimic these shapes and colors.

4. Begin collecting materials.

5. Photograph your sketch using the techniques below and upload it to Google Classroom.

Photographing your Art Work:

Especially because we are working digitally, it is important to photograph your work with careful consideration of a few techniques. Please look through the following information so that you can successfully document your work. Your goal is for your photograph to be only your artwork and to appear just as it does in person.

Things to think about when photographing your work:

  • Lighting- do you have enough light so that your work is visible and clear?

  • Angle- the clearest angle to photograph your work is head on. You get distortion if you photograph from the side or another odd angle.

  • Cropping- try to have your art piece FILL the frame of the photo. It doesn't do your work justice to see all the surrounding space. You can also edit the photo on your phone and crop out extra space.
