Memory Box
Assignment:
Assignment:
Your assignment is to create a 6"x6" cube using the hard slab technique. You will create a design based on a place or a memory. You will need to use a combination of additive and subtractive sculpture as well as pattern and texture. You will transform the cube into a box with a lid and handle.
Objectives:
1. I can roll even slabs and cut the edges at a 45 degree angles.
2. I can control drying time to achieve leather hard slabs.
3. I can construct a cube using the hard slab technique.
4. I can create different textures and patterns in clay.
5. I can cut a lid and create a handle.

Planning/Design
Planning:
Create design sketch from two views of your box in 2 point perspective.
How to design in 2 Point Perspective
Two point perspective Cubes :
Establish horizon line and two vanishing points.
Draw front edge of cube below the horizon line.
Connect top and bottom of edge to both vanishing points.
Draw back edges parallel to front edge between the perspective lines.
Connect top of back edges to opposite vanishing point.

Process
Step 1: Roll Slabs:
1. Cut template for your box that is 6" x 6". Make sure the corners are square.
2. Roll 6 slabs and cut to size with the template.
3. Stack with paper towel between each slab to aide in the drying process.
4. Allow slabs to dry to a near leather hard stage.
Step 2: Trim edges on all slabs
1. Trim slabs to all be square and the same size.
2. Cut all edges to 45 degree angles.
Step 3: Constructing the Cube
Score and slip the edges of each slab.
Press one side together at a time and reinforce with a coil.
Step 4: Cutting the lid
Step 5: Add texture to box
Subtractive texture involves repeatedly carving or stamping textures into the clay to create texture.
Additive texture involves creating a form out of clay and repeatedly attaching that form to build a texture.
Which has additive texture and which has subtractive texture?
