Practice Piece: Sgraffito Cylinder

Practice: Throw a cylinder

-Your cylinder needs to be about 5” tall.

-Your cylinder should be about ¼” thick.

-Top should be and even and as smooth as possible.

*Do not keep a cylinder until you practice enough to achieve these things.

*Re-wedge used clay and save, do not throw away.

Once you have thrown and trimmed a cylinder, you can use the wheel to add a surface design. This process is called Sgraffito.

Directions:

  1. Once your piece is leather hard, use the wheel to apply and underglaze.

  2. Once the underglaze is dry, use a loop tool to carve a design into the clay, revealing the clay body underneath.
