Assignment
Your assignment for this unit is to create a large scale abstract work of art. This will be a mixed media assignment and you will use materials of choice.

Elements of Art Practice Assignment - 15 points
Learning Objectives:
Students will be familiar with the elements of art
Students will understand non-representational art
Directions:
Divide your sketchbook page up 8 spaces. In the top space list the elements of art
In each of the following 7 spaces, create an abstract illustration of each element
Fill the entire space of the box
Use the presentation provided and be inspired by the music. Draw for the entire duration of the song.

Fine line markers
Colored pencils

Bristol board paper
Blue painters/ Masking tape
Sharpies
Watercolor paint
Watercolor brushes

Learning objectives:
Students will respond to previous marks made in a non-representational matter
Students will combine elements line, shape, color, value, and texture to their works
Students will learn to layer and overlap detail
Directions:
Prepare edges by masking taping the boarder
Begin by drawing sharpie scribbles/lines across the whole page
Take a moment to look at the line, react to it by drawing another line. Continue to add sharpie lines.
Thicken some areas of the sharpie scribbles. Color in some spaces.
Add thinner lines in response to the marks you already have- don't over think it
Add in shapes
Add patterns inside some shapes
Go in with watercolor, paint in the spaces- color
Add value with colored pencil
Add texture with marker, sharpie, or oil pastel
Add final details
Extra Practice Blown Ink Paintings - 10 points
Directions:
Using a piece of Bristol Board, drip ink onto the paper.
Use a straw to blow the ink around
Add more layers if you want
Add other materials to build in color if you choose to

Work with your partner to grab materials you can share
Bring materials you will need back to your table
Get an art smock
Cleanup team member #1:
Collect all brushes, sponges, pallets, etc. that need to be washed
Wash with soap and water
Dry
Return to where they belong
Cleanup team member #2:
Bring paintings to the drying rack
Collect any dry materials and we materials that can be saved- put back where they belong

Day 1: Wet & Dry Media

Students will practice creating non-representational art
Students will engage with the process of pushing and pulling a work of art
Students will layer
Directions:
Using charcoal, stand about 2” from the work and make a mark across the page.
Stand back and look at the work for no more than 10 seconds.
Get back into the work and react to your last movement. Keep it abstract and keep it expressive.
Step back from time to time and then, react again. Don’t overthink it.
Get acrylic paint, add some marks of color to your piece.
Obliterate - Grab gesso and paint out at least one third of your drawing. Keep the areas that you like and paint out everything else. Do this for about 30 seconds.
The white paint interacts with your old marks to make new ones.

Students will engage with the process of pushing and pulling a work of art
Students will layer
Students will utilize the principles of design in a work of art
Directions:
Take out a drawing tool and go back over areas that you painted out or add to the original marks.
Continue to assert (confidently make marks)
Obliterate- you can do this with gesso
Choose at least two principles of design to add to your work
Fix your work at the end of class

Students will engage with the process of pushing and pulling a work of art
Students will layer
Students will utilize the principles of design in a work of art
Directions:
Obliterate- you can do this with black (or another color) or gesso
Take out a drawing tool and go back over areas that you painted out or add to the original marks.
Continue to assert (confidently make marks)
Choose at least two principles of design to add to your work
