Your assignment is to practice composition and drawing using value by creating a bicycle drawing.
Objectives:
- I can use a wide range of value.
- I can make objects look 3-D by using value.
- I can use a viewfinder and thumbnail to experiment with my composition.
- I can create a composition with a balance of positive and negative space.
- I can draw proportionally.

In Class Practice
Create 5 Thumbnail Sketches:
- Use a viewfinder (or phone) to find 5 interesting compositions
- Create 5 thumbnail sketches of the bicycle.
- All 5 should have a balance of positive and negative space.
- Color in negative space black in your thumbnail sketches to check. The high contrast will make the balance more clear

Use a viewfinder!
Experiment… zoom in, zoom out, change angles.
You can also use your phone camera as a viewfinder!
Finding a Balance of Positive and Negative Space
Positive Space is the subject that you are drawing.
Negative space is the empty space around and in between the subject.
With this drawing you should find a balance between positive and negative space.
Final Assessment
Requirements:
1. Drawing should have all 10 steps of value.
2. You should model the forms with value, making them appear 3-Dimensional.
3. You should have a balance of positive and negative space.
4. Your drawing shows craftsmanship; take care of your paper and clean up pencil.
5. You should demonstrate effort and use your class time well.
