I can create an interesting composition that utilized repetition.
I can draw using interior and exterior contour lines to add depth to my forms.
I can draw with a full range of values.
I can utilize a variety of mark making techniques to create the illusion of depth and form.
What are cross contour lines?
A cross contour drawing contains parallel lines that run across the surface of an object (or radiate from a central point), such as those that appear on a topographical map or a digital wireframe.
Cross contour lines can give the illusion of volume because of the direction that they move!
Compare cross contour to a pure contour drawing.
Practice/Warm up: Cross contour of simple forms
-Draw your hand multiple times to fill the page. Begin with the “pure” contour line.
-Add in cross contour lines that follow the form of the hands.
-When finished, find a more complex object from the still life wall to practice with.
Draw a pine cone In your sketchbook.
Begin with the exterior contour lines.
Add the Interior contour lines.
Use line weight.
Controlling line weight:
There are two basic guidelines for this technique:
1. Accentuate lines nearest to you (everything is more distinct when close up).
2. Accentuate only one side of an object and/or lines on the bottom (to represent shadow and weight).

Objectives:
Students will learn how to shade forms with value
Students will understand the different grades of drawing pencils
Students will understand where to place value in relation to light
Students will create a gradation
Students will shade objects from life
Directions:
Watch the video provided
Shade an apple along with the video
Contour line drawing vs. Full value drawing
Draw a set of silverware using pencil shading. Try to match the values you see in front of you to those on your paper.
Objectives:
1. I can practice burnishing and layering.
2. I can blend from one tone or color to another tone or color.
3. I can create form with color.
Assignment:
On the worksheet provided, shade the following:
A color spectrum
A curve
A ribbon
A sphere
Practice blending and creating a gradation.
Step by step directions:
Video directions:
Directions: Using the reference photo provided on the worksheet, fill in the picture with line and value. In the empty spaces, you need to fill in the image with lines. Inside the shapes, you need to shade in 3 spaces with black and white value and 3 spaces with colored pencil value.
Example:
Examples:
Requirements:
Create a dynamic composition that fills the space of the page.
Drawing needs to incorporate complex contour lines.
AND
Drawing needs to incorporate value
Value can be on a gray scale and/or in color.
Paper size needs to be a minimum of 12"x18".
Examples:
Objectives:
Students will brainstorm subjects for their compositions
Students will understand overlapping and layering
Students will develop a dynamic composition for their final project
Directions:
Complete the planning assignment provided by completing the following steps. See below for specific directions and visual examples.
Brainstorm and select your subject
Gather images and print
Collage and trace your images into one full page in your sketchbook (full page sketch)
Select a theme or and object to draw and create your composition.
Make a list of at least 5 ideas
Ex: plants, animals, clothing items, items you use often, food, fruit, tools, anything with interest and detail.
Things to consider:
Does your subject have detail?
Will you repeat your subject to fill space? Will you repeat the same subject or have a varitey?
Directions:
Gather a variety of reference photos of your subject. Choose images at different angles. Choose some images that are close ups, and some that are far away.
Make and copy and upload your images to this document so you can print them. You need a minimum of 5 images.
Image source options: Take pictures, old photos, Google images, magazine images
Tip: You are going to use these pictures to collage a design onto one page in your sketchbook. Size your images to be large enough to collage into your sketchbook paper.
Directions:
Using one page in your sketchbook and your printed pictures, trace and collage your images into a design.
Trace your images one at a time- choose the ones you want to be in the front first. Repeat the images and trace new images behind them. Allow your subject to overlap onto the page. Object(s) should go off the frame of the page in multiple places
Draw how you will separate the line and value portions of the paper- use a ruler or a shape guide.
Video:
Directions:
Draw a 1"x1" grid over your sketch
Draw a minimum of 1 1/2 " grid on final bristol board. You can enlarge it as many times as you want. For example 2x bigger would be a 2" grid on the final paper. 3x bigger would be a 3" grid on final paper.
Use the grid method to draw your design as light as possible!!! You do not want to see this pencil later!
Use light sketching lines to layout GENERAL composition- do not focus on details with pencil.
Original sketch = 8" x 11"
1.5x larger = 12"x 16.5"
1.75x larger= 14"x 19.25"
2x larger= 16" x 22"
Drawing 1"x1" Grid on Sketchbook Paper:
Enlarging the Grid Video:
Clean up your lines with sharpie
Find the prominent exterior lines
Begin to find interior lines
Be conscious of how the texture and line work follows the cross contour of the form
Draw interior lines lightly
Thicken up prominent lines and add line variety
